Saltalamacchia Clarifies Remarks About Cervelli

Sep 11, 2014 11:04 PM

Latin teammates of Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia have no issue with the statement he made about Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli following Tuesday night's game. When asked for his thoughts about Cervelli's celebratory clap at home plate after he hit only his second home run of the season, Saltalamacchia raised a few eyebrows with his comment. "The game is changing," Saltalamacchia said Tuesday. "Younger guys are coming in, (Rangers shortstop) Elvis Andrus and (Blue Jays shortstop Yunel) Escobar, a lot of Latin players and that's the way they play the game. It's OK to an extent, but if you go further than that, than that's when you've got to kind of step back." A few minutes later in the clubhouse, Saltalamacchia attempted to clarify what he meant.

Nationals Park Beer Vendor Saves Child

Oct 31, 2014 9:19 PM

Another ballpark tragedy was thankfully avoided at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. last week. Emmanuel Marlow, 49, who works as a vendor at Nationals Park and other stadiums in the district, was making his normal rounds Thursday afternoon when he noticed a commotion in one of his sections. A young boy had begun choking on his food and those around him were panicking. When Marlow came upon the scene and saw that no one else had taken charge, he immediately abandoned his vending duties and began performing the Heimlich maneuver. On his third attempt, Marlow dislodged a piece of chicken from the child's throat. "I guess they never had experienced a first-aid situation," said Marlow, who had once worked a game at FedEx Field when a patron had a mild stroke. "[The boy] was actually going to a new color. I knew I needed to jump in and do it. There was no time for hesitation. It had to be done right then and there." After a quick examination at the stadium, the boy was deemed to be OK. His grateful mother went up to Marlow and spent 10 minutes hugging him, crying and thanking him for saving her son's life.

Dunn, Guillen Discuss Reduced Role

Sep 4, 2014 4:29 PM

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and slugger Adam Dunn have spoken about possibly cutting the designated hitter's playing time. Guillen said Dunn, who was out of the lineup for the second straight game against the Twins on Monday night, was receptive to the meeting. "I don't know yet. I talked to him we had a little chat. It went nice. He understood my point, I understood his point," Guillen said. "Obviously I'm going to (play) the guys that swing the bat good but are you're going to see him? I can't say no because he will play some day." On the season, Dunn is hitting .163 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs. "Like I said in the past, he's hurt. He doesn't show he's hurt. He's embarrassed. It's very tough for him to go through it," Guillen said.
